I never thought I’d paint on an oval canvas. The shape did not particularly appeal to me and besides, it looked so old-fashioned.
Then someone gave me two oval frames. They sat around cluttering up the place for years.
Eventually I decided to acquire some oval canvases so I could make use of the frames. The canvasses sat around for years too.
Then one day while looking at some my previous landscapes, I thought that the subject would work well in an oval frame. This canvas is the result.
Sometimes one can surprise even oneself.
Though the frequency of utilization is far, far less than in prior times, ovals are still used in art. Whether I am a rebel, a trendsetter or an anachronism in using one remains to be seen.
