I made this drawing several years ago when I was investigating geometric shapes in landscapes. I created it for an exhibition of works on urban themes. It is not your usual subject. The view is downward from an upper window toward a section of an old street with all its cracks, patches and pits. The texture of the old concrete of the road contrasts with the smoother texture of the more recent patches. The metal access port and the shadows of palm trees mitigate the orthogonal linearity of the street, and their more organic shapes balance the rectilinearity of the right side of the drawing, while the diagonal tilt of perspective adds motion where none is. The drawing is both representational and abstract at the same time. It was also both challenging and fun to create, and not my usual type of subject.
